During my career in the Tech world there was always this disconnect. Despite my success I often missed fulfillment, like I was wasting my time selling something that wasn’t important to me.
One of my former colleagues replied to this statement saying; ‘Wow, amazing! But still, you were great in selling stuff and it never showed that it wasn’t important for you.’
He is right… it was important to me. The thing is, it wasn’t what I was selling that was important to me, it was what I was ‘building’ that fuelled me.
Simon Sinek once described it so well when he told the story of a man who came across three bricklayers. The man asked the first bricklayer what he was doing. “I’m laying bricks,” the worker replied. He then asked the second bricklayer the same question. “I’m putting up a wall,” he said. When he asked the third bricklayer, he responded: “I’m building a cathedral.”
As this story illustrates, three different workers can do the exact same task but for different reasons. The first may have laboured exclusively for the paycheck. The second was likely motivated by a sense of completion. But the third was, with no doubt, driven by a deep desire. Every brick was a step towards his aspiration. He would do whatever was needed in order to see his glorious vision come to fruition…
Just like the third bricklayer, I too was building my cathedral.
Every sale I closed stood for something so much bigger. Sales equaled freedom to me, it symbolised freedom and independence!
I looked at sales the same way as how I look at life;
THERE IS NO LIMIT,
THERE ARE NO BOUNDARIES,
THERE ARE ONLY POSSIBILITIES
My work in sales enabled me to buy two houses. After living in my first house for 10 years it has now been in the rental market for some years now. The second is a mansion, which I renovated into 3 luxurious apartments.
For years I’ve build on my independence, and on my growth, so I can fully focus on my bigger mission… Part of that mission, something I am very passionate about, is to use my talents and gifts to help others.
